QuickBooks Online vs Intuit Enterprise Suite: which connector, and moving between them

Edited

Intuit offers two accounting products that Apideck connects to with separate connectors:

  • QuickBooks Online, for small and medium businesses, uses the QuickBooks connector.

  • Intuit Enterprise Suite (IES), for larger organisations with several entities, uses the Intuit Enterprise Suite connector.

Both connectors use the same Intuit API and offer almost the same resources: invoices, bills, payments, journal entries, customers, suppliers and so on.

Which one should my customer use?

Use the connector that matches the product your customer subscribes to:

QuickBooks Online (Simple Start, Essentials, Plus or Advanced)

Intuit Enterprise Suite

Ask your customer which one they're on. Intuit's API can't tell the two apart: an IES company looks the same as a QuickBooks Online Advanced company, so Apideck can't detect it for you.

Setting up your Intuit app

You don't need a second Intuit developer app for IES. Both connectors use the same Intuit app and the same Client ID and Secret, so you can reuse the credentials you've already set up for QuickBooks. See the Intuit Enterprise Suite connection guide.

Working with multiple entities (IES)

  • Each entity is a separate connection. Every IES entity is its own Intuit company. Your customer authorizes each entity they want to connect separately in Vault.

  • Record IDs are per entity. The same ID (for example customer 58) can belong to different records in different entities, so always keep track of which connection a record came from.

  • No cross-entity transactions. Intercompany postings across entities aren't available through the API.

Moving a customer from QuickBooks Online to IES

When a company upgrades from QuickBooks Online to Intuit Enterprise Suite, it stays the same Intuit company. You can then move its existing Apideck connection to the Intuit Enterprise Suite connector without the customer re-authorizing, using the Migrate connection endpoint in the Vault API:

POST /vault/connections/accounting/quickbooks/migrate
{ "target_service_id": "intuit-enterprise-suite" }
  • The connection keeps its credentials and settings, so the customer doesn't need to do anything.

  • The token keeps the permissions it was originally granted. If you later need permissions that only the IES connector requests, the customer re-authorizes once.

Alternatively, your customer can connect the Intuit Enterprise Suite connector in Vault. In that case they should sign in with the same Intuit admin user who originally connected your app.
